Ms Maciver was born in Stornoway and educated in Stornoway Primary and the Nicolson Institute before leaving the islands at 17 to study at Aberdeen University. There she gained a law degree and post graduate diploma in legal practice before going to Glasgow and then Edinburgh where, on completion of her legal traineeship, she practiced law for 13 years, specialising in corporate and commercial law.
Jane Maciver returned to Stornoway where she set up her own business consultancy and was also an IIP Assessor principally for the Highlands and Islands and a freelance project manager. Jane was employed as Project Manager on the Comhairle’s new school’s project through the challenging set-up phase. In 2010 she was appointed as Chief Executive of Stornoway Port Authority, where she oversees the day to day running of the organisation and the Port Authority’s ambitious plans for development of the port.
