Captain John Smith, after completing two years pre-sea education in the Lews Castle College in 1967, served his apprenticeship on various general cargo vessels sailing worldwide, gaining his Second Mate’s certificate in 1971.
John Smith moved to the North Sea in 1976 to work on oil related vessels, predominately on anchor handling supply vessels (AHTS). He gained his first command in 1986. He was also a Master on MCA’s emergency towing vessels for some time.
John Smith commenced working as a freelance Marine Consultant in 2006, during this time he was employed worldwide in various roles such as, Safety Coach, Auditor, Tow Master, Marine Representative, Marine Warranty Surveyor and Marine Compliance Officer. He was co-opted to the Stornoway Harbour Board in the summer of 2014.
